The Honeymoon Effect

Remember that episode of Friends, when Monica and Chandler go on their honeymoon and for the entire trip there is a couple ahead of them also honeymooning that gets all the perks? As a Friends fan I remember that episode well. I always wondered if there were actually perks you could get just by going on your honeymoon. Good news, there are!

It can feel strange to mention that you’re on your honeymoon to a complete stranger in hopes of getting something out of it, but it is easier to bring up then you think! The best time is when you are checking into your hotel, flight, or dining reservation. It is at those times that people generally make small talk while they are checking you in so make sure to mention that you are on your honeymoon. You may only get a “Happy Honeymoon” out of it, but you may also get something nice like a room upgrade or free champagne. After the first time you mention it, you’ll find it much easier to bring up.

Hawaii is a major honeymoon destination and you will find a lot of honeymooners anywhere you go. The travel industry embraces this. At the luau we attended, the host asked people to raise their hands if they were on their honeymoon and then invited them to the dance floor while a special “lover’s song” was performed. Before landing in Oahu, West Jet flight attendants congratulated all the honeymooners and announced their names and seat location while people clapped. Honeymooners are a big part of the travel market. No matter where you vacation, you may find people willingly and able to give you some nice trip bonuses. Don’t feel timid to mention you are on your honeymoon. Enjoy it. It will be the only time you get to use your honeymoon power.
