Where to Spend New Years When You Don't Like New Years

Once the big man has visited each house, the presents have been opened, and the turkey has been eaten, one question usually arises from those around us: what are you doing for New Year’s Eve?

For some people (usually those who have had their plans figured out since the fall) answer this question excitedly, going into detail about how they are going to spend every minute of the night. For others, it can be a point of contention or indifference. With answers like “we’ll see when the day comes”, “I’m not big on New Years so we’ll probably just stay home”, “it’s so hard to get a cab New Year’s what’s the point in making plans” or “maybe we’ll hit up a house party or a bar”. But what if you went somewhere where it didn’t matter what day of the year it was? You know what I’m talking about, go on vacation for New Years!

Where would be go and what would we do, you ask? Well here are some of my top picks:

1. Spend the night at a sporting event: Last New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were lucky enough to be in Calgary visiting family so we opted to go to a Calgary Flames game on New Years Eve. It was great! We went out for supper before the game, took the subway (so we didn’t have to worry about traffic or parking), and got to see a great night of hockey live. The game ended well before midnight and following the game the arena put on a short pyrotechnic show to simulate fireworks. It was very fun. We took the subway home and were actually on the subway for the stroke of midnight. We were completely content with that as many people on the subway were rushing around trying to make it to a bar before midnight but we had already had an awesome night so there was no rush for us! Many NHL teams have games on New Year’s Eve and it’s a great alternative for those who want to avoid the New Year’s Eve traffic.

2. Take a cruise: Why not spend New Years at sea! The great thing about a cruise? No need to drive, take a cab, or subway to get to where you’re going for your celebrations because everything is in walking distance. Each ship usually has a way to ring in the New Year onboard, whether it be with a special meal or party or you can order room service to your stateroom and skip the festivities while sitting on your balcony overlooking the ocean.

3. Stay at all all-inclusive resort: This option has very many similarities to a cruise except you stay on dry land. Imagine spending New Year’s Eve on a warm beach wearing a bathing suit instead of freezing your butt off in your dress jacket and fancy dress while trying to get a cab. Sounds pretty great right?

4. Rent a ski chalet or cabin: Banff, Jasper, Whistler; these are just some of the great mountain locales you can visit! Now these places are popular holiday destinations and fill up fast so book early to avoid disappointment. You could spend New Year’s Eve celebrating in one of the many bars or restaurants popular in mountain towns or skip the crowds, and hang in by the fire in your chalet. Either way, you can’t go wrong spending New Year’s Eve in the mountains!
